Miriam Stivers Zachman, age 82, of Ripley, Ohio, died Saturday March 11, 2006 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Zachman was born November 1, 1923 in Ripley, Ohio, the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Eliese (Bambach) Stivers. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew Jackson Stivers III, Frank Stivers II and Ernst Stivers. Mrs. Zachman was a graduate of Ripley High School, attended Ward Belmont School, was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and did graduate work at the Ohio State University. On August 10, 1941 she married Earl G. Zachman and they were the parents of three children, Thomas, Richard and Lisa. They were well known for their Western Auto and Zachman Distributing Company in Ripley, Ohio. Miriam is renowned for her lifetime community service. She was a charter member of the Ripley Women's Club, which was organized in 1947, a charter member of Ripley's American Legion Post #367Auxiliary and an active member in the Ripley Lt. Byrd Chapter of the DAR. She was also a lifelong and active member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Ripley, a life member of Ripley Heritage and, with her sister, donated the family home to become the Ripley Museum. Miriam was a trustee and founding member of the John P. Parker Historical Society and was a major contributor and researcher for Ripley's widely acclaimed historical work, Ripley, Ohio It's History and Families . Throughout her years of service she was involved in many projects in Ripley, Including helping to establish the Ripley Historic District, getting the road to the Rankin House constructed, restoring the cannon on the Ripley Library yard and helping establish a Ripley kindergarten. She donated the first handicapped accessible van to the newly formed Ripley Life Squad and was a lifetime supporter of the Ripley Library. Miriam was a friend to all and helped many. She was a noted historian for Ripley and the surrounding area and corresponded with individuals all over the country tracking their ancestors. She was talented and engaged in many artistic pursuits including the stained glass window project at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Ripley.
Mrs. Zachman is survived by her husband of sixty-four years - Earl G. Zachman; two sons - Thomas Zachman and wife Jane of Ripley, Ohio and Richard Zachman of Hillsboro, Ohio; one daughter - Lisa Flannery and husband Ron of Ripley, Ohio; six grandchildren - Laura (Nate) Jamison, Elizabeth (Len) Orlando, Meghan (David) Williams, Andrew Zachman, Katherine Flannery and Collin Flannery; four great grandchildren - Adycen Cooper-Williams, Logan Campbell, Andrew Jackson Jamison and Thomas Orlando and one sister - Jane Dyruff of Santa Barbara, California.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Ripley, Ohio. Rev. Jaime Wirth will officiate. The family will be receiving friends from 9:00 until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Church. Interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley. If desired, memorials may be made to the Ripley Museum, 219 N. Second Street, Ripley, Ohio 45167; the John P. Parker House, Front Street, Ripley, Ohio 45167 or to the Centenary United Methodist Church, 110 N. Second Street, Ripley, Ohio. The Cahall Funeral Home in Ripley, Ohio is serving the family.
